Accountability Partner

I’m going to be honest - the term “Fractional Leader” just strikes me as very “buzzword-y”. I don’t particularly like it as I’m not a fan of buzzwords in general. One company I worked for got hooked on the word “synergy” for a while and used it in almost everything. Ugh! 🤢 


Corporate buzzwords aside I’d argue that one of the important aspects of Fractional Leadership is this idea of being an Accountability Partner. 


Some roles - or maybe it comes down to the people in those roles - are naturally aligned to his sort of relationship. In simple terms, looking at an organizational hierarchy with clear lines of reporting structure it's easy to see where these relationships should be.


However, it’s those relationships not illustrated on the org chart that can be just as (if not more) important than direct reports. It's these relationships that can make the difference between getting projects done and stalling out due to unresolved scope requirements, differing expectations and delayed decisions.


When people naturally develop productive relationships across functional lines, they’ve probably created an "accountability partner” without even realizing it. They’ve built trust. When you have trust you’re more likely to behave in ways that protect that trust – you’re Accountable and so are they.


Unfortunately not every organization has this or knows how to nurture it. This could be due to a lack of leadership or simply a lack of time.
